Our Varsity Team Journal Our JV Team Journal

Mon. Nov. 1, Turnersville - The Lady Lions' season came to an end today as the squad put together a consistent blocking and defensive scheme against Township's outside attack too late in the second game of a 12-25, 23-25 loss.  Along with few digs, erratic passing also made a steady attack difficult to sustain, leading to only 9 total kills in the match, with 3 apiece coming from junior OH Danielle Buchanan and sophomore middle Kelly McShay.
Despite what felt like an abrupt end to the team's season, the squad had a great deal to be proud of.  A final 8-2 division mark and a 13-9 overall record are nothing to sneeze at for a team composed of 9 juniors and 2 sophomores among those who played regularly with many also filling completely new roles for our team.  Whatever disappointment remains for the team when the season starts up again in August of `05 should serve as a good motivator for better things as that team will have its eyes on a bigger prize -- to truly challenge Williamstown for the Patriot Division crown.

Sat. Oct. 30, Voorhees - At Eastern's McAleer tournament, a day of volleyball that serves as a great warm-up for teams headed to the state tournament, highlights for the Lady Lions included splits with tough Eastern and Cherokee squads during pool play and some sparkling defensive gems against Southern in a 14-16 quarterfinal playoff.  Go HERE for complete results for the day.

Fri. Oct. 29, Pennsauken - Although moments of indecision and silence also helped make it a close match, a defensively much-improved Pennsauken squad made the team's final regular season match a squeaker as West walked away with a 25-23, 25-22 win.  Kelly Smith's 5 kills, 7 blocks and 12 digs highlighted the Lady Lion effort.

Wed. Oct. 27, Medford - The Lady Renegades of Shawnee had no answer to West's consistent passing and deep corner swings as the Lady Lions cruised to a 25-9, 25-21 victory.  Julie Lo and Rebecca Pierce delivered 5 and 4 assists respectively while Rebecca's 5 kills and 3 aces and Danielle Buchanan's 5 aces keyed the offense.

Mon. Oct. 25, Cherry Hill - Although rustiness was clear from nearly a one week layoff and a Saturday with no practice because of the JV tourney, after a sluggish game one, the Lady Lions shook off the cobwebs to score a 2-0 victory over the Lady Golden Eagles of Seneca.  It was also senior farewell day as seniors Vanna Tauch, Erin Decker and the always energetic Editha Sacdalan played their last regular season match at West and were given stuffed lions wearing their jerseys, balloons and flowers.  Erin and Editha each tallied a good pass in game one and Vanna earned a dig in game two to accompany Rebecca Pierce's 7 assists, Kelly McShay's 5 kills and Rachel Lee's 12 aces.

Tue. Oct. 19, Cherry Hill - On a day that was apparently too wet for many other sports to take place, the Lady Lions received press from the "Courier-Post" in a 2-0 win over the Lady Eagles of Winslow because of the presence of a detoured reporter originally bound for a postponed soccer game.  Although we very much disagree with his ideas that our performance against Cherokee the previous day was silent and "lackluster" (see below -- he mistook mention of our poor scrimmage against Cherokee in Sept. as commentary on Monday's match), the article did have nice things to say about our team's increased communication, the aggressive serving of sophomore Allie Kleeman for a total of 7 aces and our young team's goal to improve through to next season to challenge Williamstown for the Patriot Division crown.  Check out the article HERE.

Mon. Oct. 18, Cherry Hill - In what was their most well-rounded performance of the season, the Lady Lions defeated the Lady Chiefs of Cherokee 2-0 in dominating fashion, clinching a spot in the state tourney in the process.  Over the weekend, preparation for this match included discussions about the team's previous 15-25, 13-25 drubbing at the hands of Cherokee in an early September scrimmage and how this match could therefore be seen as a measuring stick for the team's progress this season.  As a result, the importance of the match to the black team was apparent from start to finish as all servers were aggressive, all passers and defenders were decisive and quick, and all attacks were timed and placed well off of the best setting so far this year.  Despite an early departure due to a dislocated left pinkie in game two, Kelly Smith tallied 4 kills and 3 aces while fellow OH Danielle Buchanan also pounded the ball down with authority to the tune of 4 kills and 3 aces of her own.  Sophomore Kelly McShay's rediscovered timing and aggressiveness in the middle led to another 4 kills, marking the first time this season that 3 team members each had more than 3 kills.  Junior Julie Lo fed Kelly, Danielle and Kelly perfectly, accumulating 6 assists (team season high) along with 4 each from Kelly Smith and Rebecca Pierce.  The team also combined for a season high 34 digs with Danielle (10), Rebecca (6) and sophomore Allie Kleeman (5) leading the way.  Well done, ladies.  Let's build on this...

Fri. Oct. 15, Williamstown - A fired up Lady Braves team looking to seal its 2nd straight Patriot Division Championship took advantage of Lady Lion feet that weren't fully committed to passing and digging today, giving Williamstown a comfortable 2-game lead in the standings.  While West appears to have no trouble maintaining energy and confidence at home, playing away from Jones Gym it continues to be a struggle.  Danielle Buchanan had 3 kills and 2 blocks and Rebecca Pierce had 3 assists and 5 digs.  The Lady Lions are left with 2 matches before the state tourney cut-off and a need to win at least one of them to qualify.

Thu. Oct. 14, Cherry Hill - Despite suffering a 2-0 loss to the #14 Lady Red Devils of Hunterdon Central, a long lost high level of energy and aggressiveness reappeared for the varsity Lady Lions, resulting in potent, hard serves, spirited play and an exciting second game.  Kelly Smith's 5 kills and 5 digs led the way along with 5 and 4 assists respectively from Rebecca Pierce and Julie LoDanielle Buchanan increased her lead as the top digger on the team by adding another 14 for the match.

Wed. Oct. 13, Cherry Hill - The athletic, potent attack of the visiting Minutemaids of Washington Township paired with hesitant passing and defense from the Lady Lions carried the visitors to a 2-0 win today.  Bright spots for the home squad included 6 and 5 kills respectively from outside hitters Danielle Buchanan and Kelly Smith and 6 digs from the middle back position by junior Rachel Lee

Tue. Oct. 12, Pennsauken - The always scrappy, defensive-minded Lady Tornadoes of Pennsauken Tech put up a fight but succumbed to the deep serving, hard hitting and smart pushes of the Lady Lions.  OH Kelly Smith led the way with 6 kills and 3 aces while Rebecca Pierce also swung well out of the middle for 3 kills and 5 nasty, float serve aces.  Sophomore defensive specialist Allie Kleeman also tallied 5 floating aces in game one alone with a mix of deep and short serves.  The team set a season high for assists with a total of 12 (3 each for Kelly, Rebecca and Julie Lo), a sign of improved passing and smarter decisions on the part of both regular and emergency setters alike.

Sat. Oct. 9, Voorhees - Although a "quad" match at Eastern resulted in two losses to tough Eastern and Southern squads, along with valuable playing experience, the Lady Lions also came away with a 3-game victory over the Columbia Lady Cougars from Maplewood, crucial to the team's state tourney qualification aspirations.  Highlights from the day included setters Julie Lo and Kelly Smith each earning 5 assists against Columbia and Rebecca Pierce's 4 assists against the #10 Southern Lady Rams.  Danielle Buchanan accumulated 34 digs over the course of the 3 matches and Rebecca tallied 30.

Thu. Oct. 7, Cherry Hill - The Lady Lions completed the first of their two laps through the Patriot Division portion of their schedule with a 2-0 win over their next door neighbors, the Lady Indians of Pennsauken.  The win raised their division record to 4-1 and ran their winning streak to 6.  While junior OH Kelly Smith led the attack with 4 kills, it was the aggressive serving of Danielle Buchanan (7 aces), Sina Teerarak (4 aces) and sophomore defensive specialist Allie Kleeman (3 aces) that led to the majority of the team's points.

Tue. Oct. 5, Cherry Hill - The varsity squad ran its streak up to 5 with a 2-0 win over Shawnee.  Junior middle/setter Rebecca Pierce was first in kills with 4 while Julie Lo (6 aces) and Danielle Buchanan (7 aces) kept the Lady Renegades off-balance with their aggressive serves.  Junior middles Megan Ryan and Alana Gleckler and junior right side Sina Teerarak also performed well as 2nd game substitutions.

Mon. Oct. 4, Cinnaminson - The Lady Lions pulled above .500 with a trip up Rt. 130 and a 2-0 win over the well-coached, first-year Lady Pirates of Cinnaminson.  Danielle Buchanan's 4 kills and 4 aces led the attack while junior right side Rachel Lee chipped in 2 kills and 6 digs.

Fri. Oct. 1, Tabernacle - West's passing and aggressive serving were too much for the first-year Golden Eagles of Seneca today.  Kelly Smith led the attack with 6 kills off of a strong setting effort by Rebecca Pierce (personal best 10 assists) and Julie Lo to pave the way to the team's 2-0 win.  Danielle Buchanan chipped in 12 service points which included 9 aces.

Thu. Sept. 30, Medford - The Lady Lions made it two straight with a 2-0 win against a scrappy, first-year squad from Lenape.  Danielle Buchanan served well to the tune of 6 aces while Rebecca Pierce (2 kills, 12 digs) and Kelly Smith (3 kills, 7 digs) provided the rest of the offense that was needed.

Mon. Sept. 27, Sicklerville - Despite the return of hesitation and a general lack of energy and emotion that perhaps comes with the jitters of hitting the road for the first time, the Lady Lions scratched out their first overall and division win of the season today against the Lady Eagles of Winslow.  Aggressive serving in part by juniors Kelly Smith (5 kills, 3 aces & 7 service points) and Rebecca Pierce (3 kills, 2 aces & 9 service points) carried the day and made up for the squad's overall indecisive defense and an attacking effort that seemed out-of-whack throughout the match.

Thu. Sept. 23, Cherry Hill - A new, improved and more spirited and confident version of the Lady Lions took the floor today to give the Lady Braves of Williamstown a run for their money.  Fresh off of their win over #18 Eastern on Tuesday, the defending Patriot Division champs from Willytown had their hands full in game one as the West squad passed every hard serve that came their way with great accuracy, generating quality attacks that led to 10 kills for junior OHs Kelly Smith and Danielle Buchanan and sophomore middle Kelly McShay.  Although the Braves' outstanding attacking duo of OH Nina Camaioni and middle Rachel Williams proved too potent in game two, many positives and a proverbial "turning of the corner" occurred for the Lady Lions as a team in this match.  Junior middle/setter Rebecca Pierce added 6 assists, 1 block and 7 digs in the effort.

Tue. Sept. 21, Cherry Hill - The need for aggressive, quick decisions to pass continued to remain a top priority as the Lady Lions' struggles continued in the face of #3 C.H. East's tough topspin serves.  Highlights included junior middle Rebecca Pierce's 2 blocks and junior Julie Lo's debut as a setter, chipping in 6 digs from the back row.

Tue. Sept. 14, Cherry Hill - With the start of the regular season against preseason #17 Eastern, the Lady Lions were quickly reminded that consistency will be the name of the game in 2004.  After a tight battle to a score of 10-10 in game one, erratic passing and a hesitant defense allowed scoring streaks for the Lady Vikings at the end of the first game and the start of the second to close out the match.  Bright spots from the match included junior OH Danielle Buchanan's 6 digs and aggressive serving in game 2 for 2 aces, junior middle Rebecca Pierce's 5 kills and 4 digs, junior right side Rachel Lee's 2 kills and 7 digs and junior OH Kelly Smith's 6 digs.

Sept. 11, Voorhees - Coach Armour's annual Eastern Viking Invitational is often a perfect, early proving ground for the Lady Lions and the 2004 version of the tournament was no exception.    The team's execution of its new 6-3 rotation was put to the test early in the tourney's blue pool by preseason ranked #3 C.H. East along with traditional north and central NJ powers Clifton, East Brunswick and Fair Lawn.  The team quickly learned in its first 2 games against East that when aggressive quickness, proper positioning and solid decision-making go away, easy points will follow for our opponent, resulting in an exciting 13-15 game one loss followed by a disappointing 8-15 second game.   Up and down play continued throughout the day until the Lady Lions salvaged a hotly contested 15-13 win over Fair Lawn in their final game.

Mon. Oct. 25, Cherry Hill - The JV beat Seneca 2-0 (25-19, 25-8) today, based on solid play by the entire team on Senior Day.  The JV Lady Lions wish the seniors the best of luck in everything they do in their bright futures.

Sat. Oct. 23, Cherry Hill - Cherry Hill West Lady Lion Volleyball's first venture into hosting a tournament was a smashing success as West's parents and players, officials Jack Tsikitas and John Daglian, and the players and coaches of the visiting teams from Cherokee, Columbia, Pt. Pleasant Beach, Southern and Williamstown all did their part to make the 1st Annual Black & Purple Tournament a day of fun and quality volleyball.  In addition, the JV Lady Lions won the tourney's initial Purple Pool Championship (see below and the tourney's results page), scoring a thrilling win over a very tough, previously undefeated Williamstown "White" team in the pool final by a score of 25-22.  Throughout the day, great performances were turned in by setters Krista White and Shaina Bradley while smart push and deep corner roll kills came from Sina Teerarak, Alana Gleckler, Megan Ryan, Vicky Long, Rachel Knable, Lindsay Kerr, Ali Hird and Jessie Tomasetti.  Aggressive, knuckling floaters and hard, topspin serves resulting in big runs came from Kay Yi, Lynn Passarella, Rachel, Vicky, Shaina and Lindsay.
In the Black Pool, Cherokee's "Orange" squad rose from its 3rd place in pool play to capture the trophy with a win over the #1 seeded Southern "Black" team..

Tue. Oct. 19, Cherry Hill - The JV beat Winslow Twp., 2-0 (25-17, 25-5).  The serving was the difference, led by Kay Yi's 14 service points.  Other great serving performances were turned in by Shaina Bradley, Krista White, Sina Teerarak and Kristie Keating.  Alana Gleckler, Vicky Long, Rachel Knable and Gina Manfredi each provided kills.

Mon. Oct. 18, Cherry Hill - Amazing defense by the JV Lady Lions was just not enough as they dropped a heartbreaking 2-0 (22-25, 24-26) decision to the Lady Chiefs.  The defense was led by incredible digs by Lindsay Kerr, Sina Teerarak, Kay Yi, Rachel Knable, Kristie Keating and Lynn Passarella.  The offense was led by Krista White and Shaina Bradley with great killls from Alana Gleckler, Megan Ryan, Gina Manfredi, Ali Hird and Vicky Long.

Fri. Oct. 15, Williamstown - Despite dropping a 2-0 (23-25, 18-25) decision to the JV Lady Braves, the purple Lady Lions' performance had many bright spots.  The aggressive serving of Lindsay Kerr and Vicky Long combined for 9 service points while Vicky and Sina Teerarak earned some key roll and push kills in a tight game one.  Great defensive and setting hustle throughout both games by Kay Yi, Shaina Bradley and Krista White was also apparent.  Rachel Knable contributed in many ways with strong serving and athletic digs in game two.

Thu. Oct. 14, Cherry Hill - The JV dropped a 2-0 (13-25, 13-25) decision to the Lady Red Devils who were just too tough for the Lady Lions who had too many unforced errors.  The girls played well in stretches but their lack of experience showed at times.  They put up a good fight but couldn't hang with them at the end.  All the girls gave a great effort and look forward to starting another win streak.

Wed. Oct. 13, Cherry Hill - The JV lost a nail-biter 2-1 (26-28, 25-17, 14-16) to Washington Twp. in what was by far the best match the team has played this season.  Great setting and hustle came from Krista White and Shaina Bradley as usual and the kills were provided by Alana Gleckler, Jessie Tomasetti, Gina Manfredi, Sina Teerarak, Rachel Knable, Vicky Long and Megan Ryan.  Alana and Gina each earned a block and great defensive plays came from Ali Hird, Kay Yi, Lynn Passarella and Natalie Saffos Kristie Keating recorded 10 service points and Shaina added 14.

Tue. Oct. 12, Pennsauken - JV won their 7th straight, 2-0 (25-15, 25-20) over Penn. Tech.  Gina Manfredi, Vicky Long, Ali Hird, Krista White and Alana Gleckler led in the kill department while Vicky added a monster block.  Krista had 12 service points and Shaina Bradley and Krista supplied their usual solid setting.

Thu. Oct. 7, Cherry Hill - The JV squad kept pace with varsity's winning streak with their own 2-0 (26-24, 25-15) win over Pennsauken which featured a dramatic come from behind victory in game 1.  The girls were down 24-20 when junior middle Lindsay Kerr served 6 straight service points to close out the game.  Lindsay had 8 service points for the day while Rachel Knable, making her "A" team debut, added 14 service points of her own and numerous digs.  Lynn Passarella also added many digs and a great service touch.  Kills went to Gina Manfredi, Jessie Tomasetti, Alana Gleckler, Krista White and Lindsay.  Shaina Bradley and Krista did a great job of setting to the right place today.

Tue. Oct. 5, Cherry Hill - The purple team matched the black team's streak by capturing their 5th in a row by a score of 2-0 (25-10, 25-12) against Shawnee.  Lindsay Kerr and Rachel Knable each had 6 service points while Lynn Passarella, Krista White, Gina Manfredi, Alana Glecker, Megan Ryan, Shaina Bradley and Vicky Long all added important kills.

Mon. Oct. 4, Cinnaminson - The hard, deep, topspin serving of Lindsay Kerr (13 service points) and Shaina Bradley (5 service points, 3 assists) carried the day for a 2-0 (25-13, 25-12) purple team win today.  Sina Teerarak, Alana Gleckler and Gina Manfredi each contributed 2 kills with Gina also getting her first, impressive solo block.

Fri. Oct. 1, Tabernacle - The JV squad won its 3rd in a row with a 2-0 (25-11, 25-22) win over Seneca.  Lindsay Kerr had 2 kills and 8 service points with Gina Manfredi, Jesse Tomasetti and Rachel Knable each adding significant kills.  Shaina Bradley and Krista White continued to improve their setting while the "little Lady Lions" as a whole turned in a more consistent, defensive effort.

Thu. Sept. 30, Medford - Steady passing and strong serving led to a 2nd straight 2-0 win (25-15, 25-19) for the purple team, this time over the Lady Indians of Lenape.  Serving leaders included Kay Yi (10 service points) and Lindsay Kerr (6 points) while Alana Gleckler, Gina Manfredi and Jessie Tomasetti contributed 2 kills apiece.  Rachel Knable led the defensive effort with several athletic digs.

Mon. Sept. 27, Sicklerville - The JV squad tasted victory for the first time with a 2-0 (25-13, 25-15) win over Winslow Township.  Newcomer sophomore Kay Yi led the Lady Lions with 12 service points while juniors Alana Gleckler and Sina Teererak and freshmen Gina Manfredi and Jessie Tomassetti each added 2 kills.  Super setting sophomores Shaina Bradley and Krista White each had 3 assists.

Thu. Sept. 23, Cherry Hill - The girls took on Williamstown after an inspiring effort by the varsity squad.  The first game was well played with Sina Teerarak, Vicky Long, Lindsay Kerr, Megan Ryan and Alana Gleckler providing the kills and blocks and the setting duo of Shaina Bradley and Krista White chipping in some nice assists.  In game two, the purple squad showed great improvement, playing very well before losing.  Jessie Tomasetti and Gina Manfredi had some great hits while Lynn Passarella, Rachel Knable and Kristie Keating added a solid defensive effort.

Tue. Sept. 21, Cherry Hill - Despite showing great improvement, the JV Lady Lions lost a tough 2-0 match to East.  Shaina Bradley and Krista White set very well and the offense was led by Alana Gleckler, Lindsay Kerr and Gina ManfrediVicky Long and Rachel Knable played well defensively.

Tue. Sept. 14, Cherry Hill - The first match of the season was a very tough home opener to an always good Eastern squad.  It was a learning experience for the team. The girls did show improvement from the scrimmages but it still wasn't enough.  They dropped a tough 2-0 match to the Lady Vikings.  On a very good note, our freshmen team beat Eastern's, 25-15.
