CHERRY HILL
The chatter between the players of the Cherry Hill West High School girls' volleyball team was audible throughout the Lions' gym and seemed relentless in its match again Winslow Township Tuesday.
The Lions called for balls, gave advice and cheered as loud as they could when a teammate scored a point.
For a team coming off a lackluster - and mostly silent - win over Cherokee Monday, the verbal back-and-forth provided the extra spark that propelled Cherry Hill West (10-8) to a 2-0 match win over the Eagles (7-7).
"It's good to hear everyone talking out there," Cherry Hill West junior Rebecca Pierce said. "If your team isn't talking, you get down on yourselves. That's what was happening in the beginning of the year and that's what was happening against Cherokee."
Pierce finished the match with five assists, two aces and six digs.
With Pierce being one of eleven juniors on a team that has only three seniors, Cherry Hill West coach Scott Sweeten decided to implement a rotation in hopes that a starting setter would emerge for next year.
With three losses in a row to open the season, Sweeten saw his players had trouble with the change.
But now, they are picking it up and showing confidence with their actions and their words.
"I think it was a little tough for them at first," Sweeten said. "It's a little different. They played well (Tuesday). We had a tough game against Cherokee, but they bounced back."
From the beginning of the first game, Cherry Hill West looked strong.
Pierce led the team on an eight-point run that put the Lions up 14-4. The lead proved to be too much for Winslow Township, as Cherry Hill West finished with a 25-14 win.
The Eagles opened strong in the second game, keeping pace with Cherry Hill West for the opening points.
Winslow even made a run late in the game. But Cherry Hill West's dominance throughout, led by a streak in which sophomore Allie Kleeman had five aces, gave the Lions a 25-11 win.
"If you're getting scored on a lot, you kind of get down," Kleeman said. "It's the same way if you are scoring a lot. You get in a zone, and it just seems to come to you."
Cherry Hill West's win was crucial for taking second place in the Olympic Patriot Division.
The Lions are now 5-2 in the division with wins in both of their games against third-place Winslow Township. The Eagles are now 4-3 in the Patriot.
"This was important for solidifying second place in the division," Sweeten said. "We could have dropped two to Winslow and been out of it. Next year we want a piece of the championship." Reach Lian Skaf at (856) 486-2424 or lskaf@courierpostonline.com
