Our Varsity Team Journal Our JV Team Journal

Oct. 8, Cherry Hill - This time, Coach Sweeten's alma mater came to visit West but the result was the same as the Lady Lions posted another 3-0 win over the Lady Pioneers of Clearview.  Senior setters Sung Yang and LeeAnne Estimo each posted 5 assists while senior Allison and sophomore Danielle Buchanan added 6 and 4 aces respectively.

Oct. 7, Williamstown - The well-coached, #17 Lady Braves of Willytown demonstrated with an exclamation point why they are the defending Patriot Division champs and one of South Jersey's premiere teams with a 3-0 win over the Lady Lions.  Improved, more confident play gradually came from West over the course of the match but it was too little, too late as the Braves displayed an attack and serve too potent for the black team to dig and pass consistently.  Once again, the team was asked at the end of the match to file away the lessons they learned from this loss for late season use.

Oct. 3, Merchantville - In a tiny, noisy gym known for not being an easy place for visitors to play in, the Lady Lions showed an ability to bounce back and play tough when their backs were literally against the wall with an exciting 3-2 victory over the always scrappy Lady Tornados of Pennsauken Tech.  Most of the team's attacking damage once again came out of the middle with Teresa Hansel's new season high 15 kills along with Allison's 9 kills (and 5 aces) off of senior setter Sung Yang's  32 assists.  Outside hitting sophomore Danielle Buchanan also chipped in 6 aces in game four and 3 crucial kills in game five.  Teresa (18 digs, another new high), sophomore Kelly Smith (13 digs) and senior right side Karen Hy (10 digs) were the team's defensive leaders.  As a result of her performance, Teresa was named Cherry Hill West's "Athlete of the Week".

Oct. 1 & 2, Cherry Hill - A faster, more powerful brand of volleyball came to town these days in the form of Southern's Lady Rams (#14 in NJ) and Eastern's Lady Vikings (2001 State Champs) and the team quickly discovered how costly passing and defensive hesitation can be.  Although both resulted in 3-0 losses, each team member recognized the value of these matches in helping us toward late season improvement and success.  Senior middle Teresa Hansel and sophomore Kelly Smith each adjusted to the quicker pace of attack in these matches to accumulate 7 digs each against Southern.  Against Eastern the next day, both then posted then season bests as Teresa garnered 10 kills and 15 digs while Kelly added 17 digs.

Sept. 29, Cherry Hill - Serving deep was the project for the day as the Lady Lions took 2 matches from the Lady Panthers of Camden.  Senior Teresa Hansel (7 aces, 10 service points) and sophomore Kelly Smith (5 aces, 6 service points) led the way in match one while senior Penei Lemalu (18 aces) and Smith went deep most often in match two.  Senior setters Sung Yang (18 assists) and LeeAnne Estimo (10 assists) both set the ball admirably when the opportunities came.

Sept. 26, Cherry Hill - A hard-fought Patriot division match against the much-improved Lady Eagles from Winslow Twp. resulted in a 3-1 victory for West.  The tone was set for the match when the team was down 24-16 after a side out to West in game one, senior middle Allison served 10 straight points to win it.  Although sluggish, non-vocal passing and defensive play were seen in stretches of games one and three, strong serving, some outstanding hustle and smart attacks saved the day.  Statistical leaders included seniors Karen Hy (10 service points, 4 aces, 6 digs), Sung Yang (16 assists, 3 kills, 3 aces), Teresa Hansel (5 kills, 12 digs) and Penei Lemalu (8 service points, 4 aces) along with sophomore Kelly Smith (12 service points, 5 aces, 5 digs).

Sept. 25, Cherry Hill - The team grabbed its first division win with a 3-0 victory over Camden Co. Tech's Lady Warriors based on great serving and a balanced attack.  Five team members had 5 or more service points with senior setter Sung Yang leading the way with 9 to go with her 12 assists.  Sophomore oustide Kelly Smith led the serving barrage with 8 nasty, hard-driven, floating aces and was also the leading defender with a team high 8 digs.  Senior right side Antoinette Aguilar was second in digs with 5 while also contributing 3 smart, deep corner roll kills.

Sept. 24, Mullica Hill - The team scored another 3-0 victory in its first road match, this time against the scrappy, first-year Lady Pioneer squad at Coach Sweeten's alma mater, Clearview.  Once their engines warmed up after game one, several Lady Lions picked up their defensive and offensive play.  Senior right side Karen Hy paired 13 service points with 7 digs while senior setters LeeAnne Estimo and Sung Yang added 21 and 16 assists respectively.  Power came on the attack from sophomore outside Kelly Smith (7 kills, 7 digs), senior middle Teresa Hansel (6 kills, 9 digs) and senior outside Penei Lemalu (5 kills).

Sept. 22, Cherry Hill - The tables turned for the Lady Lions in their second match as their experience proved too much for the Lady Tigers of Woodrow Wilson.  Several team members accumulated multiple aces including 7 by senior LeeAnne Estimo and 4 by senior Michelle Virata.  "Black team" newcomer sophomore Rebecca Pierce contributed 2 kills in her varsity debut in game three.

Sept. 15, Cherry Hill
- A taller, veteran Minutemaid squad upended the Lady Lions, 3-0, in the team's first official rally scoring, best-of-5 match.  Although the team's performance was characterized by many service errors and inconsistent passing, the Lions also at times turned in improved, aggressive play defensively and on the attack.  Sophomore Kelly Smith chipped in 5 kills while senior setter Sung Yang added 17 assists.

Oct. 3, Merchantville - The home of the Tornados was even less intimidating for the purple Lady Lions as they resumed their winning ways with a 2-0 (25-19, 25-11) win to improve their record to 5-2.  New contributors were sophomore setter Sina Teerarak with smart decisions and 2 aces and freshman Shaina Bradley with 3 service points.  The usual suspects also chipped in as freshman Allie Kleeman served well (5 aces, 10 s.p.) and sophomore Rebecca Pierce added 3 kills out of the middle.

Oct. 1 & 2, Cherry Hill - A faster, more powerful brand of volleyball also came from Southern and Eastern to visit the JV Lady Lions and it also resulted in straight game losses.  The vast difference between opponents that can't pass and those that can to then build an attack became clear in these matches and the purple team then committed itself to becoming the latter type.

Sept. 29, Cherry Hill - Camden did not have a JV squad.

Sept. 26, Cherry Hill - Despite some serving and passing inconsistencies, the JV Lady Lions pulled out a tight 2-1 win (25-18, 19-25, 15-12) win over the Lady Eagles.  The usual hard servers, sophomore Julie Lo (4 aces, 6 s.p.), frosh Allie Kleeman (3 aces, 6 s.p.) and Kelly McShay (3 aces, 4 s.p.) led the way to close out games 1 and 3 again.  Middle sophomores Megan Ryan and Rebecca Pierce contributed 3 and 2 kills respectively with smart, deep corner swings.

Sept. 25, Cherry Hill - The JV squad improved its perfect record to 3-0 with another straight set win (25-9, 25-1), this time over Camden Co. Tech.  Strong serving was once again the story with sophomore Julie Lo (9 aces and a team record 18 straight service points) delivering effective floaters and freshman Allie Kleeman (4 aces and 14 service points) adding deep, top spin winners.  When attacking chances came, Kleeman and sophomore Megan Ryan capitalized with 2 kills apiece.  Freshman Kelly McShay also contributed one impressive, "heads up" block.

Sept. 24, Mullica Hill - Consistent, effective serving and solid passing when facing the same was the story for the JV Lady Lions in their 25-9, 25-17 win over Clearview.  Sophomore Julie Lo and freshman Shaina Bradley each tallied 6 service points along with 4 and 2 aces respectively to put West ahead for good in both games.  Junior setter Editha Sacdalan accumulated 5 assists in game two.

Sept. 22, Cherry Hill - Woodrow Wilson did not have a JV squad.

Sept. 15, Cherry Hill - The JV Lady Lions got off to a great start with an impressive 2-game, 25-20, 25-22 win over Washington Township.  With the lead going back and forth throughout both games, West pulled away with strong serving at the end of both.  Sophomore An Nguyen (2 acces, 9 service points) and freshman Kelly McShay (5 aces, 8 service points) led the impressive serving display during crucial late game stretches.
