Mainland girls edge C.H. West

The Mainland girls' swim team joined their boys' team in reaching the Public A South swimming tournament finals.

The Mustangs, the third seed in the sectional, edged second-seeded Cherry Hill West 88-82 to advance to the championship meet Monday at Rowan University. They will meet four-time defending state champion Vineland, a 108-62 winner over Toms River North.

Mainland (12-0) No. 3 in the Courier-Post Top 10, was led by Stacey Rahter, who won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, and Joanna Thomas, who doubled in the 100 free and 500 free. They were joined by Molly McGroarty and Debbie Bateman in winning both free relays.

The second-ranked Lady Lions fell to 13-1.

Top-ranked Vineland improved to 12-0 getting a pair of wins each from Sabrina Warren and Tiffany Malatesta.

Warren finished first in the 200 free and the 100 butterfly, while Malatesta captured the 100 free and 100 backstroke.

Vineland also won both free relays.

South B

Haddonfield returns to the sectional championship meet with a 96-74 win over Woodstown.

The Bulldogs will face Ocean City, which is in its first year as a split team, Tuesday at Rowan. The Red Raiders advanced with a 93-77 win over Moorestown.

Haddonfield only won three events but used its superior depth to prevail. Meghan Schlitt finished first in the 100 butterfly, Allie Lawson took the 100 backstroke and the Bulldogs won the 200 free relay.

Ocean City was led by Samantha King and Renee Tomlin. King won the 200 IM and 100 breaststroke, while Tomlin took the 50 free and 100 butterfly. The Red Raiders also won all three relays.

Girls Non-Pub B

Our Lady of Mercy Academy gave a valiant effort but fell short in its quarterfinal match with Mt. St. Dominic's, losing 86-84.

The Villagers won the 200 medley relay, had Amy Fralinger finish first in the 200 free and Johanna Brady win the 100 backstroke, but Mt. St. Dominic's split its last relay and finished one-two to win.

Emily Adair won a pair of events, the 50 free and the 100 breaststroke, but Moorestown Friends lost St. Elizabeth's Academy 121-42. Boys Non-Pub B

Holy Spirit and Wildwood Catholic both won to advance into Wednesday's state semifinal at Camden County Tech.

The Spartans trounced Union Catholic 135-35 and will meet Bishop Eustace, which drew a bye.

Holy Spirit won all but one event and was led by Eric Mooney, who won the 100 butterfly and 100 backstroke, and Kevin Cain, who was first in the 200 IM and 100 free.

Wildwood Catholic had a much tougher time with Pope John XXIII, winning 88-82. The Crusaders will meet Pingry, which beat Gloucester Catholic 101-69.

John Maloy and Danny Flynn each won a pair of events.

Maloy captured the 200 IM and the 500 free and Flynn won the 100 free and 100 backstroke.
